Centering Prayer is a form of contemplative prayer that emphasizes interior silence and receptivity to God's presence. It is not about verbal prayer or thinking but about consenting to God's presence within.
The sacred word is not a mantra to be repeated continuously but a means to return to the center when distractions arise.
It’s natural for thoughts to occur; gently return to your sacred word without judgment.
1. Choose a Sacred Word: Select a word that symbolizes your intention to consent to God’s presence (e.g., "Love," "Peace," "Jesus").
2. Find a Quiet Place: Sit comfortably with your eyes closed and silently introduce your sacred word.
3. Silence and Stillness: As thoughts arise, gently return to the sacred word to center yourself. This word helps to re-focus your mind and consent to God’s presence.
4. Duration: Practice for about 20 minutes, once or twice a day.
